Portion and season the beef
Separate the beef into 4 equal portions and gently form each one into a ball. Do not compress the meat too much so it will be easy to smash once it’s on the griddle. Season the entire surface of each portion of beef with ½ teaspoon of salt and ¼ teaspoon pepper.

Smash the burgers
With protected hands, slide the shelf and griddle slightly out of the June Oven. Stagger all 4 portions of beef across the griddle, allowing for extra space for them to spread as they are smashed. Using the heavy spatula, immediately and forcefully smash each beef portion into a thin patty, as close to ½”-thick as possible. Slide the shelf and griddle into the June Oven. Close the door.

Griddle then flip the burgers
Griddle the burgers 2 minutes, until they are crispy and brown on the bottom. When the June Oven stops cooking, do not press anything within the app or on the June Oven. Open the door and, with protected hands, carefully slide the shelf and hot griddle slightly out of the June Oven. With protected hands, carefully use the same heavy spatula to flip each burger, slide the shelf and hot griddle in the June Oven, and close the door. Then press Keep Cooking on the June Oven or in the app.
Continue cooking then add the cheese
Griddle the burgers 2 more minutes, until they are cooked through. When the June Oven stops cooking, press Done. If prompted to "Save Longer Time" press Skip. Open the door and, with protected hands, carefully slide the shelf and griddle slightly out of the June Oven again. Place one slice of cheese on top of each patty. Allow the cheese to melt, 15-20 seconds.

Transfer, finish and serve the burgers
With the heavy spatula, transfer the first burger directly to the bottom half of a burger bun set on a June Pan or serving platter. Repeat with the rest of the burgers. Divide the caramelized onions between the burgers, spooning them over the cheese, then finish each burger with the top bun. Serve the burgers immediately with the condiments of your choice.
